Pakistan Psychiatric Research Centre, a component of Fountain House, Lahore was established with an objective of starting and initiating research work in the field of mental health & organising teaching & training programmes. Since its inception from early 1980s, it has assumed a paramount importance in the field of research in the country and has published above 58 publications based on many national and international researches which were conducted in fountain House. It has also emerged as a centre of excellence for organising educational activities, conferences, symposia and other academic activities in different fields of mental health.
While re-organizing the remit / scope of PPRC, following changes have been implemented in its structure.
The committee running the affairs of PPRC comprises of the following:
PPRC will not get any financial assistance from Fountain House resources but will generate its funding by its activities.
The committee will submit its report to Fountain House executives and Lahore Mental Health Association on regular basis.
PPRC will encourage national & international collaboration in the areas of research, training & teaching. Projects will be prepared for international collaboration and different universities around the globe will be contacted to have MOU signed to start joint projects. This will help the local researchers to have more links with the established centres of excellence and also encourage more work being presented at national & international forum.
Educational & Academic Programmes
PPRC will undertake educational activities at Fountain House. National, regional and international conferences will be organised by PPRC in collaboration with other professional organisations. PPRC will generate its funds on its own and will also set up a fund to promote and support local research activities.
The proposed new research support service in Pakistan Psychiatric Research Centre will have following components.
The changes in International Economic Environment mean that new and emerging economies would have bigger role to play in research in medical and health care area. Provision of robust research governance framework is an essential step in the development of research capacity. It provides protection to the participants and researchers by assuring that only scientifically and ethically sound research is allowed.
We plan to strengthen the ethical approval and monitoring process so that the rights of the participants are protected. For that purpose we shall follow the Helsinki Declaration and The International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH) guidelines.
The main activities we are proposing are:
Research Support System
We are planning to develop a system of research support which will work collaboratively with National and International organizations and individuals to support research activity conducted in Fountain House and elsewhere in Pakistan.
This system will have a variety of activities spanning from the development of a research proposal, ethical approval, implementation of a research project, dissemination of results through conferences and publications.
It will provide training to develop skills for these activities as well as directly work with individuals or groups to design research projects and contribute in their implementations.
We plan to be flexible to meet different needs. We will provide training in groups on site and off site. We will run workshops focused on single projects on request so that appropriate skill mix is brought together to shape a project from beginning to end. We would also provide a system of supervision for researchers tailored to their requirements.
